When a young person from the beautiful valleys of Kashmir turns a dream into reality, his success does not remain his own. It becomes a new ray of hope for the entire region. The story of Auqib Nabi, who came from Sheeri village in Baramulla and reached the international stage of Indian cricket, is also such an inspiring story, a story of hard work, passion, family support and never giving up on his dream.
On 30 September 2026, Auqib Nabi made his ODI international debut for India in the second ODI against the West Indies in Guwahati. For him, it was not just a cricket match, but an important milestone in the years of hard work he had put in to improve his game despite limited facilities.
In the begining of his journey, there was a lack of modern cricket academies, better pitches and sufficient practice facilities around him. But the facilities were limited, his passion was strong. To get better practice, he had to travel around 60 kilometres from Baramulla to Srinagar. Many times, he had to practise with whatever resources were available, but Auqib did not allow the circumstances to become a barrier on his way to his goal.
His father, Ghulam Nabi Dar, is a government school teacher. As a father, his first wish was that his son should focus on studies and become a doctor. In the beginning, he was not sure about a career in cricket. But Auqib’s passion gradually became so clear that his father also began to understand his son’s dream and support him. Seeing Auqib’s dedication towards cricket, the family supported his journey, and his father also helped him travel to and from Srinagar for training.
The emotions of the family are also an important part of Auqib’s story. When Jammu and Kashmir won the 2025-26 Ranji Trophy at his home in Sheeri, his grandmother, mother and sister, along with the entire family, celebrated with great happiness. Auqib played an important role in that victory. He took 60 wickets in that Ranji season and made a major contribution to Jammu and Kashmir becoming Ranji Trophy champions for the first time. In the last two Ranji seasons, he took a total of 104 wickets.
This achievement shows that success does not come in a single day. Behind it are years of hard work, morning preparation, regular practice, learning from failures and believing in oneself.
Auqib Nabi’s story is a beautiful message for all those children in Kashmir who dream big while sitting in their villages or small towns. Perhaps they may not have expensive cricket kits, big academies or every facility available to them today. But if they have the desire to learn, the determination to work hard and the courage to move forward, they can start from anywhere.
Auqib’s journey from Sheeri to Team India tells the new generation of Kashmir—Do not make your dreams small. Whatever the circumstances, do not stop working hard. Today’s small effort can become tomorrow’s big identity.
