Ishrat Akhtar’s journey from a small village in Baramulla to the courts of Gwalior is a story of resilience, courage and dreams that refused to fade away. Born in 1998, she was an ordinary girl with simple ambitions until her life changed forever in August 2016. A fall from the balcony of her home left her with a severe spinal cord injury and confined her to a wheelchair. At just eighteen, the accident was not only a physical setback but also an emotional and psychological one. For two years, she struggled with depression, uncertainty and the feeling that her dreams had ended before they had even begun.
In 2018, she attended a wheelchair distribution camp that became the turning point of her life. At the Voluntary Medicare Society in Srinagar, she discovered wheelchair basketball. What began as a therapy to rebuild her confidence soon turned into her passion. Day by day, her skills improved and her determination became stronger. Since Jammu and Kashmir did not have a wheelchair basketball team at that time, she represented Delhi in the nationals. Later, motivated to create opportunities for others in her region, she helped to form a J&K wheelchair basketball team and participated with them in national championships. Her relentless dedication eventually earned her a place on the Indian team that played at the Asia–Oceania Wheelchair Basketball Championship in Thailand in 2019. From a small village in Kashmir to the international stage, Ishrat had proven that no barrier is insurmountable when one’s spirit is unbreakable.
Her journey was not just about winning games; it was about reclaiming life. She resumed her education, cleared her exams and even completed a diploma in office management. Along the way, she became an inspiration for countless others, especially young women who often give up in the face of adversity. Her courage was recognized through several honours, including the Kashmir Young Leadership Award, the Women of Steel Award and the Kashmir Young Achievers Award. For the people of Kashmir, she became more than just an athlete—she became a symbol of hope.
Never content with limiting herself to one achievement, Ishrat continued to explore new challenges. In 2024, she was selected for India’s wheelchair handball team for the World Championship in Cairo, Egypt. The girl who once could not even stand was now representing her country in two different sports at the international level. This was not simply about medals; it was about showing the world that a wheelchair cannot confine a person’s dreams.
In September 2025, Ishrat carried her dreams further to Gwalior, where she competed under the Delhi banner in a para-sports event. For her, this step was not just about switching states; it symbolized her ability to adapt, to seek new opportunities and to keep moving forward no matter the challenges. Her participation in Gwalior reaffirmed her message that courage is not tied to geography and that dreams can travel as far as one’s willpower allows.
Today, Ishrat’s story is not confined to Baramulla. It resonates far and wide, touching the lives of people who find themselves defeated by hardship. She has shown that strength is not about walking on your feet but about refusing to let setbacks define your future. Every time she wheels onto a court, she carries with her the hopes of those who believe that life after tragedy is still worth living.
From the quiet corners of Baramulla to the international stage, from the despair of an accident to the glory of representing India, Ishrat Akhtar has written her own destiny. Her smile, her determination and her achievements send out one powerful message: obstacles may be heavy, but the human spirit is stronger. She is living proof that even when life tries to break you, resilience can make you rise higher than ever before.
Ishrat’s journey is a promise to all who listen—that no matter how dark the night, the morning will come if you dare to dream. From Kashmir to Gwalior and beyond, her story will continue to inspire, reminding us that hope, courage, and persistence can take you anywhere.
