A proud moment for Jammu and Kashmir, Ayaan Sajad, a 13-year-old Sufi singer from Anantnag, has struck the right chord by winning the Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar, the highest national honor recognizing children’s extraordinary achievements across various fields.
Ayaan received the 2024 Pradhan Mantri Rashtriya Bal Puraskar from President Droupadi Murmu for his exceptional contributions to art and culture. His soulful rendition of the Kashmiri classic “Be Dard Dadi Chane”, originally penned by poet Shamas Fakeer, has not only captured hearts far and wide but also placed Kashmiri music in the national spotlight.
Describing the achievement as “surreal” Ayaan shared his excitement, saying, “It felt like a dream come true when I heard the news, but holding the award in my hands was a truly humbling moment. It’s a huge responsibility.”
Despite his meteoric rise, Ayaan remains grounded, describing singing as a lifelong passion. “Music will always stay with me, no matter where life takes me,” he said. But the young maestro isn’t a one-trick pony — his love for basketball and martial arts proves that he is a jack of many trades.
Ayaan’s journey was no walk in the park. Starting with small performances and stage shows, he gradually found his feet in the world of music. His big break came four years ago with the soulful rendition of “Be Dard Dadi Chane”, which became an overnight sensation. The young prodigy draws inspiration from independent Kashmiri artists, whose passion lit a fire in him to pursue music professionally.
Ayaan’s triumph has turned heads across Jammu and Kashmir, earning accolades from leaders and citizens alike. Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha congratulated Ayaan for making the region proud, calling his dedication and talent a beacon of hope for the youth.
President Droupadi Murmu presented the awards to 17 children, celebrating their courage, grit and talent across fields such as art and culture, innovation, bravery, sports and social service. Each honoree received a medal, certificate and citation booklet.
Highlighting the significance of nurturing young talent, President Murmu remarked, “Recognizing children’s talents has always been part of our rich tradition. We must continue to strengthen this tradition, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to spread their wings and reach for the stars.”
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and National Conference President Farooq Abdullah hailed Ayaan’s recognition as the icing on the cake for Kashmir’s rich cultural legacy. Altaf Bukhari, President of the Apni Party, extended heartfelt congratulations to Ayaan’s family, emphasizing the critical role of parental support in nurturing young dreams.
Ayaan’s success is more than just personal glory — it’s a beacon of hope for the youth of Jammu and Kashmir. His melodious voice and unwavering determination have inspired countless others to step out of the shadows and aim for the stars.
As the saying goes, “The proof of the pudding is in the eating.” Ayaan’s success is proof that talent, when nurtured and celebrated, can shine brighter than the brightest star. His achievements reaffirm Jammu and Kashmir’s reputation as a land brimming with potential and creativity, ready to make its mark on the world stage.
