SUCCESS STORY OF SHEETAL DEVI

Wow, have you heard of Sheetal Devi? She is a famous para-archer from India who was born without arms!!! But guess what? She didn’t let that stop her from becoming the best in the world at shooting arrows with her feet! She is the first and only person to win an international para-archery title without arms. How cool is that?

She got the Arjuna Award 2023 from the President of India himself on 9 January 2024. That’s like the highest honor for sports in India. She also won two gold medals in mixed doubles and women’s individual in the women’s compound bow event at the 2022 Asian Para Games, after winning a silver medal in women’s double compound. She is a legend.

Sheetal was born in a small village in Jammu & Kashmir on January 10, 2007. She was always a natural athlete and never let her disability get in the way of having fun, even though it was hard sometimes. As a kid, Sheetal loved climbing trees as a hobby. This helped her develop a strong upper body which came in handy later in her life. The Indian Army played a big role in inspiring Sheetal Devi’s career in para-archery. They saw her potential and decided to train her for a youth event. But they faced a problem. They didn’t know how to train someone who had no arms for archery. They tried to help her with prosthetics but it didn’t work out. Then, they found out about Matt Stutzman, an armless archer who used his legs to win a silver medal at the London 2012 Paralympics. They thought, why not try the same thing with Sheetal?

And guess what? It worked! Sheetal learned how to shoot arrows with her feet using special equipment. She was amazing at it. She joined a professional academy and competed with other archers who had arms. She beat them all. She participated in the national championship and got recognized as an Indian para-archer. She won the gold medal at the Khelo India Para Games 2023 in New Delhi. She was awarded the Best Athlete of the Year by the Asian Paralympic Committee. She was nominated for the Arjuna Award 2023.

Sheetal Devi is an inspiration to everyone. She shows that nothing is impossible if you have a passion and a will to succeed. She is a true hero and a role model. She is awesome!
