Dr. Sehrish Asgar, a medical doctor by profession created history by becoming the first woman to top the Kashmir Administrative Services (KAS) exam-2010 in Jammu and Kashmir. She later qualified IPS and incidentally also served as Additional Superintendent of Police Budgam earlier before getting into IAS. She serves as an inspiration to others in the Kashmir valley. Such outstanding young people are now emerging as the heroes of Kashmir.

Jasia Akhtar, the first woman cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir to be selected by a Women’s Premier League (WPL) franchise, is being celebrated at her residence in Shopian. Jasia’s cousin expressed happiness and disbelief at her selection, while neighbors joined in the celebration. Representing Rajasthan in domestic cricket, the 34-year-old right-hand top-order batter was picked by Delhi Capitals for a base price of Rs 20 lakh. Jasia’s childhood passion for cricket and her dedication to the game were highlighted by her family and coaches.

A promising Kashmiri footballer named Suhail Ahmad Bhat has earned a spot in The Guardian’s prestigious list of the 60 best young talents in world football for 2022. The British newspaper, known for its reputation and status as the oldest publication in London, conducts an annual survey to identify emerging football talents. Suhail, associated with the Indian Arrows Football Club, is the first Kashmiri player to receive this recognition. Even before his teenage years, Suhail was already recognized as one of the brightest talents in the region.

Kabra Altaf, a 25-year-old from Nishat in Srinagar, Kashmir, nurtured a deep desire to be recognized as a sportsperson. Unsure of which sport to pursue, she yearned to find her place in the sporting world. Her father, whom she admired immensely, imparted self-defense techniques and throwing skills, emphasizing the mental and physical strength required in sports. In 2010, they visited the Sher-e-Kashmir Indoor Sports Complex, where they discovered Judo and other martial art sports. Intrigued by Judo’s throwing techniques, Kabra decided to give it a try and instantly fell in love with the sport. Her passion, dedication, and ambition to become the nation’s best, fueled her perseverance, even in challenging times.

Kashmir’s top multi-sports athlete, Nawab Mouzam Khan, added another achievement to his name by successfully completing a 16-km swimming challenge in Malaysia. Currently studying in Malaysia, Nawab regularly participates in international adventure events held in the country. In the Perhertian Challenge 2022 at Perhentian Island, Malaysia, Nawab swam and circumnavigated the island, covering the longest distance in his swimming career. Despite facing gastro problems during the swim, he completed it in 7 hours and 6 minutes, becoming the second swimmer from India to accomplish this challenge. Nawab, known for his skills in mountaineering, swimming, running, and cycling, has already achieved significant milestones in mountaineering, including scaling major peaks in Kashmir and India.

These youth stars are unquestionably real heroes of Kashmir.
