
The story of Kashmir’s emerging academic talent is increasingly moving beyond classrooms and universities to laboratories and research institutions across the world. Adding a new chapter to this journey is Sayima Nargis, a PhD research scholar from Jammu and Kashmir who has been selected for the LOTUS Programme FY2026, an India-Japan scientific exchange initiative supported by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST).
Nargis is pursuing her doctoral research in the Division of Plant Pathology at Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology-Kashmir (SKUAST-K), Shalimar, Srinagar. She is working under the guidance of Dr Tariq Rasool Rather, Professor of Plant Pathology, at the university’s Advanced Research Station for Agriculture. Her selection places her among a growing group of young Kashmiri researchers gaining opportunities to work with international scientific institutions. Under the LOTUS Programme, Sayima Nargis will undertake research at the Institute of Plant Science and Resources at Okayama University in Japan. Her research proposal has been approved under the ASPIRE-Type Research Framework, with e-Rad Project No. 26290341.
Her research work will focus on advanced areas of plant science, including molecular genetics, multi-omics, plant immunity and disease resistance. These fields are particularly important for understanding how plants respond to diseases and environmental stresses and for developing more effective approaches to protecting crops. For a region such as Kashmir, where agriculture and horticulture form an important part of the rural economy, research into plant diseases has a direct connection with farmers, orchards and food security. Nargis’s academic journey therefore represents not only personal achievement but also the growing importance of scientific research for the agricultural future of Jammu and Kashmir. Nargis has already contributed to scientific literature in the field of plant pathology. She has been associated with research on diseases affecting horticultural crops, including work related to apple and pear diseases and studies on Venturia inaequalis, the fungus responsible for apple scab. Her research affiliations identify her with the Division of Plant Pathology at SKUAST-K.
Her involvement in research on crop diseases is significant for Kashmir because apple and other horticultural crops are central to the region’s agricultural landscape. Scientific understanding of disease resistance and pathogen behaviour can help strengthen sustainable crop protection and reduce losses faced by growers. According to reports on the 2026 fellowship selections at SKUAST-K, Sayima Nargis has been awarded the JST-LOTUS Fellowship for three years. She is among four SKUAST-K students/researchers selected for competitive research opportunities in Japan.
The programme will provide her access to Japanese laboratory infrastructure, research methodologies and opportunities for scientific collaboration. Such exposure can help young researchers develop international networks and bring new approaches and expertise back to their academic institutions.
The selection was welcomed by SKUAST-K Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nazir Ahmad Ganai, who congratulated Nargis and her academic mentors. The university leadership also highlighted the importance of such opportunities in encouraging students and research scholars to pursue academic excellence and international scientific collaboration.
