In a historic and proud moment for Jammu & Kashmir, two exceptional athletes – Sarabjeet Singh Sodhi from Jammu and Faizan Bashir from Kulgam have been selected to represent India in the upcoming U-23 Men’s Asia Cup Softball Championship, scheduled to be held in Bangkok, Thailand from 02 June to 07 Jun 2025. This continental championship serves as a qualifier for the 2026 U-23 Men’s Softball World Cup, with the top two teams securing a spot on the global stage.
Both Sarabjeet and Faizan began their softball journeys at a young age, nurtured by a deep passion for the sport and years of hard work. Hailing from opposite corners of the Union Territory – Sarabjeet from the plains of Jammu and Faizan from the serene valley of Kulgam – their achievements shine as a beacon of inspiration for youth across J&K. Over the years, the duo has made their mark by participating in numerous national level competitions, earning respect for their dedication and skill on the field.
Their journey to the national squad began with selection trials held at Jalgaon, Maharashtra on 18-19 Jan 2025. The standout performances by both athletes caught the attention of national selectors, earning them places in two elite national training camps – one in Maharashtra and another ongoing at Vikas Puri Stadium, New Delhi. These rigorous camps were designed to prepare the country’s best young talent for international competition. Sarabjeet and Faizan’s consistent efforts and discipline earned them final selection in the Indian squad.
Waseem Raja Khan, General Secretary of the J&K Softball Association, congratulated the two athletes, calling it a “landmark achievement” for Jammu & Kashmir. “To honour this duo and other outstanding players who have represented India at international championships, a felicitation ceremony will be organized after they return from Thailand,” Khan announced. He also praised Nuzhat Gul, Secretary of the J&K Sports Council, for her unwavering support in promoting softball and helping the sport grow throughout the region.
Softball, a potential Olympic sport, is currently played in 142 countries across the world. With increasing popularity and competitive exposure, it offers promising career opportunities for young athletes. Khan urged budding players in J&K to consider softball seriously: “Our youth have the talent and the spirit. Sarabjeet and Faizan have shown that with dedication even athletes from remote districts can shine on international platforms”.
As Sarabjeet Singh and Faizan Bashir prepare to don the national colours and step onto the international field in Bangkok, they carry not just their own dreams but the hopes of an entire Union Territory. Their journey is a testimony to what perseverance, community support and raw talent can achieve. Coming June, all eyes from Valleys and hills of Jammu & Kashmir will be on the Softball Stadium in Bangkok, cheering for their heroes.
Congratulations to Sarabjeet and Faizan! May your journey inspire a new generation of champions from J&K and beyond.
