In the serene and remote village of Arigohol Akad, nestled within South Kashmir’s Anantnag district, a remarkable story of grit and passion has quietly blossomed over the years. This isn’t a tale of privilege or perfect circumstances – rather it is one of unwavering perseverance and silent determination. Hilal Ahmad Wani, a 30-year-old deaf and mute cricketer who has captured the nation’s imagination by winning the prestigious Man of the Series award at the World Deaf Cricket League in Dubai. Hilal’s stellar performance not only powered India to a thrilling championship victory but also brought much-needed recognition to a player who has let his bat and ball do all the talking.
Hilal’s story is anything but ordinary. Born healthy, his life took a dramatic turn at age three when a medical condition robbed him of his hearing and speech. Despite his family’s tireless efforts to restore his senses, the silence became permanent. Yet, rather than being a barrier, this silence shaped Hilal’s identity and carved the path for his extraordinary success. While he could not hear the cheers or communicate in the usual ways, Hilal found his voice in cricket – the universal language that needed no words.
From his earliest days, cricket was more than a sport; it was his channel for self-expression. His sister Neelam Jan proudly shares, “Cricket was the only language Hilal ever needed. He’s the most focused and humble person I know, and the game has been his lifelong passion.” Hilal attended regular schools, excelling academically and completing his 10th grade before choosing commerce. Later, he moved to Punjab, where his cricket journey gathered momentum. Representing Punjab in inter-state tournaments, his talent was undeniable. In 2014, his hard work paid off when he earned a coveted spot in the Jammu and Kashmir Ranji Trophy squad – a milestone that filled his family with immense pride.
However, the path was never smooth. Being dropped from the Ranji squad was a tough setback that tested his spirit. For a player already facing communication challenges, it was more than a professional blow – it was deeply personal. But Hilal refused to be defined by defeat. With steadfast family support, he recalibrated his focus, embracing deaf cricket wholeheartedly. He went on to lead Jammu and Kashmir’s deaf cricket team and captained the North Zone squad to multiple championships. His determination eventually earned him a spot in the Indian National Deaf Cricket Team – a testament to his relentless pursuit of excellence.
Hilal’s crowning moment came at the World Deaf Cricket League in Dubai, where he delivered an unforgettable performance. In the finals, he smashed a rapid 70 runs off just 29 balls and took three key wickets – an all-round display that earned him Man of the Match, Man of the Tournament and Man of the Series awards. His triumph resonated far beyond the cricket field, inspiring many across Jammu and Kashmir and the entire nation, his father, Ali Mohammad Wani, expressed heartfelt pride. “Though Hilal cannot hear or speak, he has gifts that many do not possess. We have always stood by him, emotionally and financially. His passion for cricket has brought him this far.”
Hilal’s extraordinary talent has now attracted the attention of Makroo Valley Sports (MVS), a respected sports brand based in Awantipora. Recently, Hilal signed an official sponsorship deal with MVS, becoming the brand’s new ambassador. This partnership is more than just a sponsorship – it’s a bold statement celebrating inclusivity and the triumph of merit. By supporting Hilal, MVS is leading the way for brands to recognize and uplift differently-abled athletes, proving that true talent knows no boundaries. What makes Hilal’s journey truly inspiring is how he has excelled without the usual means of communication. In a sport demanding teamwork, strategy and constant coordination, Hilal relies on his instinct, skill and relentless practice to shine.
His story reminds us that physical limitations do not define potential – resilience and heart do. Hilal has rewritten the narrative of what it means to overcome adversity, turning silence into his greatest strength. As Hilal continues to represent India and champion the MVS brand, he stands as a beacon of hope for countless others who feel sidelined by their disabilities. His silence speaks volumes, echoing a message of courage, passion and unyielding spirit. Whether or not an IPL contract materializes soon, Hilal has already won hearts, shattered stereotypes and inspired a generation. His journey proves that greatness sometimes comes not with noise, but with quiet determination and a whole lot of heart.
