
In the quiet village of Hanjan, nestled in the Kulgam district of South Kashmir, a remarkable story has unfolded one that speaks volumes about human potential, the power of perseverance and the triumph of will over adversity.
Rohi Jan, a woman who has been 100% visually impaired since birth has achieved a milestone that many only dream of she has been appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Education at the University of Kashmir. Her accomplishment is not just a personal victory but a source of pride and inspiration for the entire Kulgam district and beyond especially for the disability community across Jammu and Kashmir.
Rohi’s journey began in a modest household in Hanjan village. Despite the challenges posed by her visual impairment, her thirst for knowledge was unwavering from an early age. She started her education at a local private school in Hanjan, where she began laying the foundation of what would become an extraordinary academic path.
She later moved to Army School Behibagh where she completed her 9th and 10th class. She pursued her higher secondary education at Government Higher Secondary School Yaripora, continuing to push past every limitation society tried to place on her.
Rohi’s academic journey took her to Government Degree College Kulgam, where she pursued her graduation with diligence and excellence. With sheer hard work, she cracked two of the most prestigious exams in the country the UGC-NET and the Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) qualifications that open doors to academic and research careers at the highest level.
Her scholarly pursuits didn’t stop there. Rohi is currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), one of India’s premier educational institutions, further proving that no dream is too distant for those who dare to chase it.
An Inspiration to Many Rohi’s appointment as Assistant Professor has sparked admiration from educators, civil society members and activists across the region. They hail her as a symbol of resilience and strength, a role model for countless youth especially those navigating life with disabilities.
Her story sends a powerful message: Disability is not inability. With courage, determination and the right support, no barrier is insurmountable. Rohi is living proof that limitations are often placed not by nature but by societal attitudes and those too can be overcome.
