
In a grand ceremony held at the India Habitat Centre, Lodhi Road, New Delhi Ganai Ahmad Reyaz, a dedicated educator from Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir, was conferred the prestigious Dr. BML Munjal Social Impact Award 2024-25 in the Outstanding Teacher category.
Reyaz, who serves at Government Middle School Sheeri Payeen in Zone Baramulla, made history by becoming the first Government school teacher from the Union Territory to receive this national recognition.
The award presented by the Raman Kant Munjal Foundation in collaboration with Hero Future Energies, honours individuals making transformative contributions in education, sustainability and community development. Reyaz was felicitated with a memento and a cash prize in the presence of prominent figures from both the corporate and social sectors.
Instituted to commemorate the legacy of Industrialist and Philanthropist Dr. BML Munjal, the award upholds his belief in “Wealth with Responsibility.” They celebrate changemakers working at the grassroots level, especially in marginalized communities, who are driving meaningful societal transformation.
Speaking on the occasion, a representative from the Munjal family said, “these awards reflect Dr. Munjal’s vision of giving back to society. Honouring unsung heroes like Reyaz Ahmad Reyaz encourages others to contribute to nation-building.”
Reyaz was recognized for his innovative teaching methods and unwavering dedication to students in the remote village of Sheeri, Baramulla. Among ten awardees across various categories, his contribution to rural education stood out distinctly.
“This award isn’t just mine,” said an emotional Reyaz while receiving the honour. “It belongs to my students, my school and every government school teacher working tirelessly across the country. It reaffirms my belief that education is the most powerful tool for social change.”
A passionate science educator, Reyaz has ignited a spirit of inquisitiveness and innovative ideas among his students. Under his guidance, five students have won the prestigious INSPIRE Awards, progressing to district, state, and national levels. One of his most remarkable achievements includes mentoring Shahida Bano, who became the first student from Jammu & Kashmir to participate in Japan’s SAKURA Science Exchange Program.
Shahida’s journey also saw her win the INSPIRE National Award and winning ₹10 lakh cash prize in broadcasted by color TV network Invent India Challenge and also present her innovations at National Technology Week 2023 milestones made possible through Reyaz ’s mentorship.
Reyaz ’s influence goes far beyond academic accolades. His student-centered approach has significantly improved performance, fostered scientific thinking and inspired many to dream bigger. His story exemplifies the power of committed educators to uplift entire communities.
“A teacher like Reyaz proves that passion and perseverance can transform lives,” said a member of the awards jury. “His recognition is a moment of pride for Jammu & Kashmir and the entire education community.”
The Dr. BML Munjal Social Impact Awards 2024-25 honoured changemakers across 12 categories, including Outstanding Teacher (ASHA Centre), Outstanding Alumni, Outstanding Volunteers, Women Empowerment, Water Conservation, and Biodiversity Protection, among others. Reyaz Ahmad Ganai stood out for being the first government teacher from J&K to win in the Outstanding Teacher category.
