Among these inspiring personalities is Advocate Tabasum Rahim popularly known as Sibgat whose achievement at the 48th National Arm-Wrestling Championship 2026 has added another proud chapter to Kashmir’s sporting journey.
Srinagar the national championship held at the Sher-e-Kashmir Indoor Sports Complex brought together arm-wrestling talent from across the country. The event was organised by the Arm Sports Association of Jammu and Kashmir under the aegis of the Indian Arm-Wrestling Federation. The event provided a major national platform for athletes to demonstrate strength technique endurance and competitive spirit. Tabasum Rahim’s victory at such a prestigious event is therefore more than an individual accomplishment, it represents the growing confidence of Kashmiri athletes on national sporting platforms.
For Tabasum sport is not simply about winning medals. Her journey is particularly significant because she has built an identity in both law and sport. A lawyer and national-level arm wrestler she has previously spoken about encouraging Kashmiri women to pursue their ambitions and challenge social barriers. Her sporting journey includes participation in the 75 kg and 95 kg categories and several medals at national-level competitions.
Her success carries a special message for the young women of Kashmir. The image of Kashmiri women proudly holding National championship medals stand as powerful symbol of a valley in transition, A Kashmiri where dreams are breaking beyond traditional boundaries.
Tabasum’s achievement also becomes part of a much larger sporting story unfolding across Jammu and Kashmir. Cricket, martial arts, skiing, shooting, cycling, football, motorsport, athletics and para-sports are steadily expanding the region’s sporting identity. From cricket stars such as Auqib Nabi Jasia Akhter and Abdul Samad to skiing sensation Arif Khan and young motorsport talent Atiqa Mir Kashmiri athletes are increasingly making their presence felt at national and international levels.
The growth is particularly encouraging in women’s sport. Athletes such as Aneesha Sharma Jasia Akhter Atiqa Mir and Aalima Ashiq demonstrate that sporting ambition among Kashmiri girls is no longer confined to a few disciplines. Recent district-level competitions women’s leagues and Khelo India initiatives are creating opportunities for young athletes to compete learn and progress.
The recent National Junior Thang-Ta Championship in Srinagar where Jammu and Kashmir finished runners-up with 13 gold 7 silver and 11 bronze medals further reflect the depth of sporting talent emerging from the region. More than 492 athletes from 25 States and Union Territories participated in the championship.
Against this backdrop Tabasum Rahim stands as one of the new sporting heroes of Kashmir. Her story reminds us that a champion is not created on the day a medal is won. Champions are shaped by discipline setbacks determination and the courage to keep moving forward.
