
In the picturesque valley of Baramulla in Kashmir, where stunning landscapes often contrast with socio-economic challenges, emerges an inspiring tale of determination and impact. This is the story of Samaniya Bhatt, a 20 yrs old female radio jockey whose journey from a modest background to becoming a prominent radio jockey at Radio Chinar 90.4 FM, illustrates the power of perseverance and the potential for media to foster positive change. Samaniya Bhatt is the youngest radio jockey in the valley & the first female RJ from North Kashmir. Samaniya during an interview said “I was always curious to know about worldly happenings and I used to sit with my father and update myself about all the happenings across the world.
Samaniya Bhatt was born to humble family in Baramulla, a town known for its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. Her father, a farmer & a small-scale trader, and her mother, a homemaker, worked diligently to provide for their family despite financial constraints. From a young age, Samaniya was captivated by the world of broadcasting. She was enthralled by the idea of using the radio as a platform to share stories and inspire change. Growing up, her family’s limited resources did not deter Samaniya. Instead, they fueled her determination. She excelled academically and participated in local events, often showcasing her talent for storytelling and communication.
Samaniya’s passion for broadcasting and her exceptional communication skills did not go unnoticed. She mentioned that during her childhood she was often told by her teachers to take up journalism, but she never gave it a thought. After completing her Bachelors in Journalism and Mass Communication, she applied for masters and at the same time started looking for opportunities around. Things started developing when she got the opportunity to work as an intern at All India Radio (AIR) and there she got her initial thrust. Her breakthrough came when she learnt about an opportunity at Radio Chinar, a FM radio station in Sopore.
Radio Chinar station sought individuals who could effectively convey messages about government policies and army initiatives, promoting a positive narrative. Recognising the significance of this opportunity, Samaniya applied with great hope and determination. Her application stood out due to her unique perspective and unwavering commitment to using media for community upliftment. Around 250 candidates from different districts of Kashmir had applied for the post. It was challenging for Samaniya as she faced tough competition from her co-applicants and had to clear so many rounds of interviews and auditions to land on her dream job. It was exciting for her as she faced stiff competition from other applicants much elder to her in age & with work experience. She cleared the interview with grace & made it to her dream job. After the rigorous selection process, Samaniya was offered a position as a radio jockey at Radio Chinar. This role marked a pivotal moment in her journey, transitioning from a local enthusiast to a key player in a significant media initiative.
At Radio Chinar, Samaniya took on the challenge of effectively communicating the Indian Army’s efforts and government policies to the people of Kashmir. Her role was instrumental in broadcasting information about various programs under the Sadbhavna project, which aimed to promote peace, development, and cooperation in the region. She hosted a program popularly recognised as “Halla Bol”, where she invites & meet young enthusiasts & achievers mainly women from North Kashmir. Samaniya’s show quickly became a platform for disseminating crucial information. She adeptly covered a range of topics, from development projects and health initiatives to educational programs and community welfare schemes. “Most of the time, I get calls from women. They feel elated talking to me. They believe that I am an old lady and usually get inspired by my story. I am the first girl from Baramulla to work as Radio Jockey. A lot of girls now are willing to try new things and delve into other professions which are different. My advice to many such women is ‘‘Always listen to your heart and do what you want to do,” she said. Her ability to present complex information in a relatable and engaging manner earned her widespread recognition and appreciation.
Fostering Community Engagement. Samaniya’s impact extended beyond mere broadcasting. Her programs encouraged dialogue and understanding, addressing misconceptions and highlighting the army’s role in supporting regional development. One of her significant contributions was organising community outreach programs through the radio. These programs included live call-in sessions where listeners could ask questions, share their concerns, and provide feedback on various initiatives. Samaniya is using her show to publicise & celebrate the achievements of individuals and organisations in the North Kashmir communities.
Samaniya’s journey was not without challenges. Working in a region with a complex socio-political landscape, she faced the difficulty of navigating sensitive topics while maintaining objectivity and promoting positive narratives. Despite these obstacles, Samaniya remained steadfast in her commitment. Her ability to balance her reporting responsibilities with the need to address community concerns demonstrated her dedication and professionalism. Her journey from Baramulla to Radio Chinar is a powerful narrative of ambition, resilience, and the transformative potential of media. Her story exemplifies how a single individual’s dedication can lead to meaningful change in the society and inspire others. Through her work, Samaniya has not only fulfilled her own dream but has also become a catalyst for positive change in her community.
