
Umer Ahmad Ganie, a determined 19-year-old hailing from Zagigam in Kashmir’s Pulwama district, has achieved an inspiring feat by successfully clearing the NEET UG 2023 (National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Undergraduate Medical Courses). His journey to this achievement is nothing short of extraordinary, as he balanced a demanding schedule of work, education, and self-study, all while overcoming financial constraints and external challenges.Umer’s story is one of perseverance and dedication. Despite his family’s limited financial resources, he aspired to become a doctor and chose the Science stream in Class 11. His motivation sparked when he learned about a fellow student from his district who had cleared the NEET exam and became a doctor. Determined to follow in those footsteps, Umer embarked on a journey that would require him to work as a daily wage laborer during the day to support his family and attend school.
What sets Umer’s story apart is his commitment to his studies. To accommodate his work schedule, Umer adopted a unique routine. He dedicated his evenings, from 4 pm to 12 am, and early mornings, from 3 am to 8 am, for focused studying. This unusual timetable allowed him to combine his responsibilities and his passion for education effectively. Umer’s dedication shines through as he managed to find the time to study despite his demanding obligations. Umer’s family circumstances compelled him to rely on self-study and the resources at his disposal. He couldn’t afford private coaching classes, so he turned to the NCERT (National Council of Educational Research and Training) books for his preparation. He even used his painting skills to sustain his living and support his education. This tenacity and resourcefulness became all the more remarkable during the challenging times brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.The pandemic, which disrupted lives across the world, actually offered Umer a golden opportunity to focus on his studies. Despite internet outages and lockdowns in his region, Umer’s reliance on NCERT books ensured that his preparation was minimally affected. This adaptability and determination allowed him to maintain his focus and momentum in his studies.
Umer’s dedication bore fruit when he scored an impressive 601 out of 720 in the NEET UG 2023 examination. His achievement has been widely recognized, and he has been appointed as the brand ambassador for the Physics Wallah coaching institute’s Kashmir region. Umer’s success story resonates with aspiring medical students, particularly those from financially challenged backgrounds. He emphasizes the importance of hard work and leveraging the internet for resources, even if financial limitations restrict access to traditional study materials. Looking ahead, Umer has clear aspirations. He intends to pursue his MBBS degree in a government medical college in Jammu and Kashmir. His attachment to his native Kashmir, its people, language, and weather, fuels his desire to study and practice medicine within the region.
