Jammu and Kashmir has once again produced a young sporting star who is ready to carry the tricolour onto the international stage. Mujtaba Hassan, an 11-year-old soft tennis prodigy from Manigam Vessu in Anantnag district of south Kashmir, has been selected to represent India at the 2nd Asian Junior Soft Tennis Championship (Under-15 category). The prestigious continental tournament will be held at Harvest Academy in Ludhiana, Punjab, from 3 Feb to 8 Feb 2026.
Mujtaba’s selection is being widely celebrated across the Valley, as he joins the growing list of Gems of Kashmir — young achievers whose talent and dedication are reshaping the region’s identity through excellence rather than adversity. His journey reflects the emergence of a new generation of Heroes of Kashmir, who are making their mark through sports, education, innovation, and national service.
Born and raised in Manigam Vessu, Mujtaba began his soft tennis journey in 2022 while studying in Class 7 at Dream Land Educational Institute, Vessu. What began as a simple interest quickly transformed into a disciplined sporting pursuit. Early morning practice sessions, intense fitness drills, and continuous technical training became part of his daily routine. Despite limited resources and infrastructure challenges common in rural areas, Mujtaba remained focused on his goal.
Within a short span, his consistent performances brought him recognition at the grassroots level. He participated in four district and Union Territory-level championships, winning multiple gold and silver medals. These achievements established him as one of the most promising junior players in Jammu and Kashmir and paved the way for his entry into national-level competitions.
Representing Jammu and Kashmir at championships held in Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, and Srinagar, Mujtaba competed against some of the country’s best young players. These national platforms helped him gain valuable exposure, improve his competitive temperament, and sharpen his tactical understanding of the game. His ability to remain composed under pressure and deliver consistent performances impressed selectors, ultimately earning him a place in the Indian squad.
After his selection, Mujtaba expressed determination and gratitude. “I will prove my mettle wherever I get an opportunity. Representing India is a proud moment for me, my family, and my region. I will give my best on the court,” he said. For many in the Valley, Mujtaba has already emerged as a Hero of Kashmir, symbolising discipline, perseverance, and national pride.
Mujtaba also acknowledged the critical role of institutions in shaping his career. He thanked the Amateur Soft Tennis Association of Jammu and Kashmir and the Soft Tennis Federation of India for their continuous support. He expressed special gratitude to Mr. Shakir, Secretary of the J&K Soft Tennis Association, and Dr. Hassan, Executive Member of the Soft Tennis Federation of India, for their guidance, encouragement, and belief in his abilities.
Behind every young champion is a team of dedicated mentors. Mujtaba credited his coaches — Mr. Umer, Mr. Basit, Mr. Manzoor, and Mr. Firdous — for their relentless efforts in developing his technical skills and mental strength. “Their mentorship helped shape my game. Without their guidance and hard work, this achievement would not have been possible,” he said.
Mujtaba’s rise reflects a broader positive shift in Jammu and Kashmir’s sports ecosystem. With increasing institutional support, better training exposure, and growing participation at the grassroots level, young athletes are now finding pathways to national and international platforms. Stories like Mujtaba’s inspire countless children across the Valley to pursue sports with confidence and ambition.
As preparations begin for the Asian Junior Soft Tennis Championship, expectations are high. Yet beyond medals and rankings, Mujtaba’s participation carries symbolic importance. It represents hope, opportunity, and the quiet transformation of Kashmir through youth achievement.
From Manigam Vessu to the Asian stage, Mujtaba Hassan’s journey is a powerful example of how Gems of Kashmir are emerging as national ambassadors of talent and resilience. As he steps onto the court wearing India’s colours, he stands not only as a competitor but as one of the rising Heroes of Kashmir, carrying the pride of the Valley and the aspirations of a new generation.
