Army Goodwill School, Hajinar, nestled in the remote Kandi Karnah region of Kupwara district, has long stood as a beacon of hope and opportunity for children living in this far-flung border area. Known for its commitment to quality education and holistic development, the school has been instrumental in empowering young minds to dream beyond geographical limitations. Among its many bright students is Miss Fazdha Mustaq, daughter of Shri Mustaq Ahmed, whose passion for science has recently earned her recognition on a prominent national platform.
With a deep interest in solving real-life problems through scientific thinking, Fazdha has developed an innovative Carbon Monoxide (CO) Detection System capable of raising an alarm when toxic levels of the gas are present indoors. This project, simple yet life-saving, reflects both her scientific acumen and her sensitivity toward challenges faced by local communities. Her model was proudly displayed at the Science Exhibition held at Plaksha University, Mohali, Punjab, where it garnered appreciation for its practicality and relevance.
Carbon monoxide is a dangerous and silent killer—colourless, odourless and extremely harmful when inhaled. In the Kashmir Valley, particularly in remote and hilly areas, traditional heating methods like bukharis, angeethis, and charcoal heaters are still widely used during the bitter winter months. These are often associated with accidental CO buildup in poorly ventilated homes, making carbon monoxide poisoning a recurring threat. Fazdha recognized this problem and set out to design a device that could safeguard families, especially during harsh winters.
Her CO Detection System works on the principle of gas sensing technology. Using a sensitive CO sensor, basic electronic circuitry and an alarm mechanism, the device continuously evaluates air quality within a closed space. When the carbon monoxide concentration crosses the safety threshold, the alarm immediately sounds. The brilliance of her innovation lies in its affordability and simplicity. Unlike expensive commercial detectors, her version can be assembled at low cost, making it ideal for rural households that need effective safety solutions without financial burden.
Presenting this device at Plaksha University’s Science Exhibition was a transformative experience for Fazdha. Surrounded by young innovators from all corners of India, she showcased not only her project but also the spirit of the youth of border regions. Her confidence, clarity of explanation and understanding of the social need behind her innovation made her display stand out. She also had the opportunity to interact with scientists, educators and fellow students, helping her broaden her perspective and refine her ideas.
The foundation of her achievement lies firmly in the support system provided by Army Goodwill School, Hajinar. The school has consistently encouraged scientific inquiry, creativity and problem-solving among its students. Teachers and mentors there played an essential role in guiding Fazdha, helping her develop the technical elements of the project while nurturing her confidence to present it on a national platform. The Indian Army’s efforts through such institutions have had a profound impact in remote areas, creating a generation of informed, confident and socially responsible youth.
Equally important has been the encouragement of her parents, especially her father. In regions where educational pathways often come with unique challenges, parental support becomes a driving force. Fazdha’s journey stands as a testament to what dedication, opportunity and guidance can achieve together.
Today, Fazdha’s work is celebrated across Karnah and Kupwara. She has become an inspiration for young students—especially girls—who now see a role model in her. Her innovation also holds significant potential for wider community use, particularly in preventing CO-related accidents during the winter.
As Fazdha continues to explore the world of science, her determination promises a future filled with greater contributions and breakthroughs. Her story reflects not just personal success but the powerful impact of institutions like Army Goodwill School in shaping the future of Jammu & Kashmir.
