
Shahid Hilal, a talented athlete from Srinagar, achieved a remarkable victory by winning a gold medal at the 9th Jammu and Kashmir Union Territory Pencak Silat Championship. The event took place from September 21 to 23, 2024, at the Indoor Hall, Polo Ground, Srinagar, attracting participants from across the region. Representing the Grand Warriors Academy in Srinagar, Shahid showcased exceptional skill and determination throughout the competition, ultimately earning him the top honor. His success not only highlights his dedication to the sport but also brings pride to his academy and the local community. More than 1,250 athletes from both gender categories participated in the 3 days event, representing 18 districts across the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The championship featured intense competition, highlighting the skills and dedication of the competitors as they battled for top honours. Athletes demonstrated not only their martial arts prowess but also a spirit of camaraderie and sportsmanship, making the event a significant highlight in the regional sports calendar. The participation of such a diverse group of competitors underscores the growing popularity of Pencak Silat in the region and the commitment of the J&K Pencak Silat Association to promote the sport.
In his weight category, Shahid Hilal achieved an impressive victory, clinching first place after a hard-fought match against Robin from Jammu. The bout showcased Shahid’s skill, technique, and determination, as he skilfully countered Robin’s moves and executed his own strategies effectively. This victory not only highlights Shahid’s talent in Pencak Silat but also reflects his rigorous training and preparation leading up to the championship. By overcoming a strong opponent, Shahid has solidified his status as a formidable competitor in the sport and contributed to the excitement of the event. Shahid emphasised that this achievement would not have been possible without the unwavering support of his parents, who have been there for him every step of the way. Their encouragement and belief in his potential motivated him to push through the challenges. He also expressed heartfelt gratitude to his trainer, Adil Hussain, whose expertise and mentorship have been instrumental in his development as an athlete. With their support, Shahid is determined to continue striving for excellence in Pencak Silat.
He shared that during the last National Pencak Silat Trials, he unfortunately sustained an injury to his left arm, which significantly affected his training and competition plans. The recovery process was lengthy and challenging, requiring both physical rehabilitation and mental determination to get back on track. Now, with renewed focus and dedication, he is preparing for the upcoming national-level championship. He expressed his optimism, believing that with continued hard work and perseverance, he will one day achieve his dream of competing at the world championship level. Shahid also made great achievements in previous year championships inside the country. In 2022 Shahid bagged bronze medal in National Pencak Silat Championship by competing with various states and Union Territories in India.
This event represents a significant milestone in the promotion of martial arts and the enhancement of the sports culture within the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. Organised by the Pencak Silat Association of J&K and sponsored by the J&K Sports Council, the championship brings together athletes and sportsmen from various districts, fostering a spirit of competition and camaraderie.
