In the Banihal area of Ramban district, a remarkable story of resilience and entrepreneurship is unfolding. Heena Lateef, a 27-year-old woman from Takia Tethar Banihal, has not only overcome setbacks but has also become a beacon of inspiration for others in the region. After completing her MA in English Literature from Jammu University, Heena faced challenges in securing a government job. Undeterred, she and her husband embarked on a journey of exploration that ultimately led to the establishment of a groundbreaking food processing unit, ‘Sheikh Enterprises,’ the first of its kind in the Chenab Valley.

Heena’s entrepreneurial spirit and determination shone through as she navigated the complexities of starting a business. It took nearly two years to solidify the idea and decide to venture into the food processing industry. With the support of the Prime Minister Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP ), Heena and her husband brought ‘Sheikh Enterprises to life in 2022. The response to their products has been overwhelmingly positive, with increasing demand for the various snacks they manufacture, reaching every corner of Jammu and Kashmir.
Currently, the food processing unit is employing around a dozen individuals, with seven women managing different processes within the unit. Additionally, several young men are engaged in marketing the products, securing their livelihoods in the process. Heena’s venture not only contributes to economic development in the region but also exemplifies the potential for small businesses to create employment opportunities and uplift local communities.
Beyond her role as a successful entrepreneur, Heena is actively involved in sharing her experiences and business insights. She runs a YouTube and Instagram channel named ‘BAHI FOODS,’ where she imparts knowledge and ideas to aspiring entrepreneurs. Through this platform, Heena encourages women, particularly those with higher education, to strive for financial independence and become job providers rather than job seekers.
Heena emphasizes the initial challenges and risks associated with entrepreneurship but underscores the importance of determination, consistency, and hard work in achieving one’s goals. Her story serves as a testament to the transformative power of entrepreneurship, particularly in empowering women to take charge of their destinies and contribute meaningfully to society. In conclusion, Heena Lateef’s journey from an English Literature graduate to a successful entrepreneur in the food processing industry is a story of resilience, determination, and community impact. As ‘Sheikh Enterprises’ continues to thrive, it not only enriches the local economy but also inspires others to explore their entrepreneurial potential, fostering a culture of self-reliance and empowerment in the beautiful Chenab Valley.
