Bariq Wani is the youngest entrepreneur & founder of the Online food delivery app “Food Hung” from Hardushiva area of Sopore in the valley. He was pursuing a computer engineering degree in Mumbai when the COVID-19 pandemic set in and severely impacted the food supply chain. He had to leave the city and arrive back in the Valley.
In an interview, he mentioned, “When I returned from Mumbai, after a few days I tried to order food but couldn’t due to the non-availability of any platform in our area. The idea of developing the app struck my mind when I realized the need for a food delivery app in the valley”. In this era of technology, people can order their favorite food from the comfort of their homes. People of Kashmir physically visit a restaurant and there is no option of food delivery in far-flung areas.
He said “Initially, I failed to convince my parents about the viability of the idea. However, my friends and cousins stood by me and I started my own venture, ‘Food Hung’ to deliver food online via the app.”
Bariq Wani, at the age of 20 started the first-ever Kashmir-based food delivery app which is operational in the Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir. Kashmir is a beautiful valley that has been witnessing political turmoil for many years now. The valley has been in the headlines for various reasons, and the ongoing unrest has affected the tourism industry and other businesses. With the inception of Foodhung, Bariq Wani has not only provided a platform for food lovers but also generated employment opportunities for the local youth like delivery boys and management teams. The app has been a ray of hope for many people who were affected by the pandemic and were struggling to earn their livelihood.
The tagline of the app, “Kashmir’s own food delivery app” is aptly chosen, as the app caters to the taste and preferences of the locals. Kashmiri food is known for its rich flavors and unique cooking style, and presentation. Food Hung has managed to bring these flavors to the doorstep of people within 30-40 minutes. The app provides a platform for restaurants to advertise their cuisine, including Kashmiri Wazwan, Chinese, Indian, and continental. The app has tied up with various restaurants and food joints in the area to provide a wide range of food items to its customers. The delivery boys of the app are prompt and efficient, ensuring that the food reaches the customers within the promised time.
Last but not the least, Food Hung has helped Kashmir’s food delivery sector grow. The app creates jobs and caters to the local’s needs. His work on the app is admirable, and he serves as an example to many young entrepreneurs, becoming a hero of Kashmir. In addition to giving food enthusiasts a forum, Food Hung has made better the lives of Kashmiris whose lives have been affected by the instability in the valley. The success of the application has given the people of Kashmir fresh hope by demonstrating that creativity and perseverance can triumph in the face of any challenges.
